Barnet Louis Liberman, Chairman

Barnet Louis Liberman, Chairman

Barnet Louis Liberman was born 59 years ago in the New York City borough of The Bronx. Graduating New York's DeWitt Clinton High School with academic honors, Barnet attended the University of Vermont before receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree, with major in economics, in 1967, from New York University (Washington Square College). The following year, he earned his graduate degree, Masters of Science, from the London School of Economics. This degree entitles Barnet membership in the Royal Society of Economists.

Upon receiving his provisional certificate, Barnet worked for the New York City Board of Education as an elementary teacher for children of special needs. Obtaining his real estate license, Barnet, with partner Winthrop Davies Chamberlin, embarked upon the renovation of several historic New York residential properties, among the most notable: 57 Thompson Street (first elevator residential renovation in SOHO) and 66 Pearl Street (this, a rare 18th century block dwelling, now known as the Coenties Slip Apartments). The Pearl Street project, a well publicized "rescue and renovation," established a reputation that continues today.

Known today as Orb Management Ltd., Barnet and Win developed and own two major landmark New York buildings, 421 Hudson Street (Printing House), the groundbreaking conversion of industrial to luxury loft conversion in Manhattan's Greenwich Village and 305 2nd Avenue, the national historic property called Rutherford Place, sparking the development of New York's Union Square neighborhood.

Barnet Liberman is an entrepreneur in the true sense. Barnet owns six patents for inventions in freezing processes. In 1990, Barnet Liberman established WinterLab, Ltd. to develop intellectual property based upon a proprietary brine freezing process. Winter Lab work ranges from food to medical applications.

Barnet saw the potential at Indiepix for "breaking down the barriers" as he likes to put it "between filmmakers and their audiences". Involved in the development of this project from the first design meetings in the fall of 2003, Barnet saw the potential of independent film and the distribution of Indiepix as powerful cultural change agents.

Barnet is a Board Member of CLAL (the Council on Learning and Leadership), the Jewish Center of East Hampton, and Young Israel of 5th Avenue. He serves on the Board of Advisors to (Brooklyn) Poly Prep Country Day School. A former Director of the Abraham Joseph Heschel School, Barnet chaired the Building Committee. As a consultant on real estate, he is associated with Shakespeare & Company in Massachusetts' Berkshire County.
